I am Nataly Ivanova. Nataly is my first name and Ivanova is my surname. I am eighteen years old. I'd like to tell you a few words about my family. My family is not very large. I've got a mother, a father, a sister and a grandmother.

My mother is a teacher of geography. She works at the University. She likes her profession. She is a good-looking woman with brown hair and grey eyes. She is forty-three but she looks much younger. She is tall and slim.

My father is a computer programmer. He is very experienced. He is a broad-shouldered, tall man with fair hair and grey eyes. He looks like a viking. My father is handy with many things. He can fix almost everything: a vacuum cleaner, a washing machine, a fridge, a TV-set, and what not. He's got a few shelves where he keeps everything he needs.

My parents have been married for twenty-six years. They have much in common, they are both interested in politics and history but they have different views on books and films. Квартира

My flat

I live in a 9-storeyed building, which is situated far from the city centre. It is a typical block of flats built in the 1970-th. We can see a nursery school, several shops and a stadium out of the windows. The border of the city is not far from my house, so our district is green and quiet and we can enjoy a picturesque view from the balcony.

We live on the seventh floor. Fortunately, there is an elevator in our house that's why we needn't walk up.

Our flat is very comfortable. It has three rooms: my parents' bedroom, a living room and my room. We also have a kitchen, a hall and a bathroom. Our flat is provided with all modern conveniences: cold and hot running water, electricity, gas, central heating, telephone and wi-fi.

A living room is the largest one in our flat. There is a table with several chairs round it in the middle. On the right of the table, one can see a wall unit, a wardrobe and a bookcase. There is a sofa and two arm chairs on the left of it. By the opposite wall there is another table with a TV set on it. The floor is covered with a thick carpet. There are two pictures on the walls.

My parents' bedroom is smaller. There is a bed with two dressing tables and small lamps on each of them.

My room is the smallest one but it's very cozy. I have a desk, an armchair, a wardrobe and a bed. There is a computer on my desk and two wooden shelves with books above it on the wall.

Our kitchen is big enough. There is a cupboard, a refrigerator to the right of the cupboard, a gas-stove and a sink. Our kitchen is well-equipped. It has a toaster, a microwave oven and a coffee maker. We like to spend evenings in our kitchen, to drink tea and talk.

My working day

On weekdays the alarm-clock wakes me up at 6.30 and my working day begins. I'm not an early riser, that's why it's very difficult for me to get out of bed. Anyway I open the window and do morning exercises. Then I go to the bedroom, wash my face and brush my teeth and after that go to the kitchen.

Usually my mother makes breakfast for me. But when she is away on business, I make breakfast myself. I don't have much for breakfast. A sandwich and a cup of coffee is enough for me, because I try to control my weight. After that I put on my clothes, walk my dog and feed him, then go to work. It takes me an hour to get to my office.

I usually arrive at work ten minutes to nine, because I have to prepare for the beginning of working day. I work as a secretary at a small company. There are always some fax messages to translate from English into Russian. Sometimes my boss wants me to write a letter to our business partners abroad. There are also a lot of phone calls which I have to answer. At 1 o'clock in the afternoon we have lunch. We usually have lunch in a small cafe just round the corner. At 2 o'clock we come back to work. I usually leave the office at 5:30 p.m. During the working day we also have several short coffee breaks. But sometimes we have no time for them.

I come home at about 7 o'clock in the evening. My parents are usually at home, waiting for me. We have dinner together. Then we drink tea, watch TV or just talk or read. Sometimes I do some sports such as jogging or roller-skating. At about 11 p.m. I take a shower and go to bed.

Школа

My school

I'd like to tell you a few words about my school. My school is one of the oldest specialized schools in our city. It's famous for its high quality education and strict discipline. It is not difficult to enter the university after our school. That's why a lot of parents want their children to enter our school.

The school is very well-equipped. On the ground floor there's a gym, a canteen, a library and a workshop. On the first floor there's a large assembly hall, a home economics room, and two computer classes. On the second floor there are chemistry, physics and biology labs.

I went to school six days a week. Classes began at nine o'clock in the morning. Each lesson lasted forty-five minutes. After the third lesson we had a twenty-minute break. During this break we went to the canteen to have lunch. Every day we had 6 or 7 lessons. The lessons were over at about 3 or 4 o'clock in the afternoon.

We usually had a lot of homework and it took me three hours to do it. I sometimes had to sit up to write a composition, to prepare a report, to translate an article from English into Russian or to learn a poem by heart.

At school we had classes in Russian, Literature, Mathematics, Biology, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, English, History, Computer Programming. We also had Music, Physical Education, and Information Technology. My favourite subject was English. I liked to learn new words, to dramatize texts and dialogues.

After classes I didn't usually go home at once. We had some out-of-class activities. Our cultural life was well-organized. For example, we had an orchestra, a choir, an arts club. As for me, I took part in the arts club.

I liked my class. Everybody was friendly and easy to get along with. I was on good terms with my classmates and we often spent our free time together.

A friend of mine

My best friend's name's Victor. We made friends ten years ago. We are of the same age. We live in the same house, so we see each other very often.

Victor is a tall, broad-shouldered boy with blond hair and blue eyes. He is very honest and just, and I totally trust him. He never lets somebody down, so I can rely upon him. As for me, he's got only one shortcoming - he is a bit offensive.

Victor's family is big. He has a brother and a sister. His father is a doctor. He is the cleverest man I've ever met. He knows much because he's read many books. His mother is an English teacher. No wonder Victor knows the language very well.

We spend a lot of time together. We often watch video or listen to music. Sometimes we go to the museums or go camping. We talk for hours about different sorts of things (from politics to girls). We also discuss films, TV programmes, books.

I very seldom quarrel with Victor. What I like best about him is that he is always willing to help and share his knowledge, thoughts and feelings. I respect him for his strong will, intellect and modesty.

I miss Victor when we don't see each other for a long time. Our friendship helps me to feel strong and sure of myself.

My future profession

When you leave school you understand that the time to choose your future profession has come. It's not easy to make the right choice.

As for me, I have changed my mind a lot of times. It was difficult to choose one of the hundreds jobs. But now I know what I want to do in future. I want to be a guide. I am interested in history, I like travelling and I like learning foreign languages. I know that it's very difficult to become a good guide. You should know the subject you speak about very well, you must be well-educated and well-informed. You must read a lot about the places you travel in order to interest your audience in them. And you should know the language perfectly and be ready to answer all the unexpected questions which tourists can ask you. But a good guide is also a great actor and every excursion is like a performance. It's a great responsibility to accompany foreign tourists and to make them love your city and your country.

I think the profession of a guide helps people of different nations to understand better each other and to build a bridge between cultures. It is very important nowadays.

My hobby

Hobbies differ like tastes. If you have chosen a hobby according to your character and taste your life becomes more interesting. Hobbies are divided into four large classes: doing things, making things, collecting things, and learning things, for example, foreign languages.

The most popular of all hobby groups is doing things. It includes a wide variety of activities, such as drawing, painting, making sculpture, designing costumes, handicrafts.

Almost everyone collects something at some period in his life: stamps, coins, matchboxes, books, records, toys, postcards, watches, badges. Sometimes private collections are given to museums, libraries and public galleries so that others might take pleasure in seeing them.

As for me, in my childhood I was fond of collecting stamps. My hobby helped me to learn a lot about other countries and other peoples' traditions, the world's flora and fauna. Maybe that's why I was good at geography and biology at school. I used to bring the albums to school and exchanged stamps with my schoolmates.

When I was at the ninth form, I decided to collect compact discs. Today, I've got more than one hundred CDs of my favourite groups and singers! Every time I buy a new CD I study the information printed on disc booklets. I also try to find out everything about the singers I like. That's why I read a lot of specialised magazines and books on the history of rock. My favourite groups are «Nirvana» and «Ariya». I even write letters to some fan-clubs in other countries, so it's a good opportunity to keep up my English.
